BNI Tech Tip - July 22 - XP Updates

Hi All -

Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy with today's tip for those using Windows XP.

The good news is that there won't be any more updates to Windows XP.

The bad news is that it will only be a matter of time until the internet cooties start punching holes.

There are alternative solutions. . . some of which are free.

If you know a small business looking for help, please send them to me, Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy. Number 8 on your list.

Hi All -

Bud Freund your BNI Tech Guy with today's tip about clean data.

If your thumb drive goes through the laundry because you forgot to take it out of your pocket and it thoroughly dries, you'll see your files and folders again.

Think of it as an alternative method of data scrubbing.

This week, I'm looking for executives at Non-Profit organizations because I can help increase awareness and raise funds.

If you get it off the ground, it will stop sucking dust like a vacuum, stay cleaner inside and prolong the life of the fan.

I can share this information thanks to the patience of Matt Baier who rescheduled our appointment so I could handle another customer's crisis.

Local garages could benefit from this kind of tech help, so if you like your mechanic, please send them to me, Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy. Number 8 on your list.

Hi All -

I'm Bud Freund your BNI Tech Guy with today's tip about the cost of wireless safety.

There is a new law in Germany:

Ubuntu discoveries - Music

So my web sensei suggested "blips" on Facebook and blogs on (you guessed it) here.

So here goes:

I like listening to music in the kitchen while puttering.

I used to play my OiPod, but found myself listening to the same things over, and over, and. . . you get the picture.

So I started with Pandora, but found that after an hour, they were playing the same Motown tunes over again. . . and the library's gotta be pretty big.

So I found on the Optonline home page, a link to their music page.

On their music page are 2 choices:

Music Choice - The optonline feed that also goes over the cable TV signal - but it's out of sync with the internet feed so their songs have reverb, reverb, reverb if you try to play out of your TV and your computer.

Rhapsody - my new fave. Too many "radio stations", lots of weird names and lots of choices. . . Essential Classical, Smooth Jazz, 70's, 80's. The list goes on.

And best of all, I've been pulling the music without a logon to optonline! In short, free for anyone (please let me know) who finds it.

Anyway, the Ubuntu discovery. . .

I logon to the kitchen PC and start playing music. Screen saver comes up. . . My kid logs on. . . and the music keeps playing!

Try that in Windas!

April 29 Tech Tip - Military Power Point Less

Hi All!

Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

Today's tip could not be invented.

Coming from Tuesday's New York Times, the following phrases were extracted to describe  military PowerPoint presentations:

“When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war,”

“PowerPoint makes us stupid,”

“I have to make a storyboard complete with digital pictures, diagrams and text summaries on just about anything that happens,”

“death by PowerPoint,”

“just agony,”

And my favorite. . .

“hypnotizing chickens.”

If you'd rather hit your thumb with a hammer than watch that co-worker's PowerPoint, send them to me, Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy. Number 7 on your list.

April 22 Tech Tip - Don't Lose Your OiPhone

Hello All!

I'm Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

Today's tip is really just common sense.

If you go drinking after work, and  show off your new cell phone, don't leave it behind.

Especially - as reported in The New York Times - if you're a technician working on the prototype of the next generation iPhone.

Yes it's true, the ninny left it at a bar in Redwood City and now photos are all over the internet.

If you know a small business looking for a designated driver for their technology, please send them to me, Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy, number 7 on your list.

Oh and Rich, Julie, I may have a lead for you on a not-so-hot-shot technician looking for work.

April 1 Tech Tip - Oi mail

Hello All!

I'm Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

Today's tip is for those getting frustrated with email.

As of yesterday, anyone with an ATT Worldnet email address was shut down because ATT turned off the Worldnet email server.

Dumping ATT and getting a Gmail or Yahoo account will allow you to keep that email address - something like budlyapi@gmail.com - forever.

Then you can switch internet providers whenever you get tired of giving that irritating organization your money every month.

If you know a small business owner getting overwhelmed with email, please send them to me. . .

Budly, your BNI Tech Guy.

February 25 - Tech Fashion

Good Morning!

It's nice to see you all.

I'm Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy with today's tip for the technologically fashion conscious.

According to The New York Times, there are now papparazzi web sites
where you can click on the photo of your favorite celebrity and find out what designer clothes they're wearing.

The URL's are on my blog, http://budlybni.blogspot.com.

That's how I get my, "You're a peon." styling.

And if you know a small business that would prefer it's employees get work done and not check fashion trends on the web, please send them to me, Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

January 28 Tech Tip - Backup

Good Morning All!

I'm Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

Today's tip is a show and tell:

This is a backup:

This is a backup:

This is a backup:

. . . and yes, this is also a backup:

There  are 2 kinds of people in the world:

Those who back-up. . .

and those who will.

And always remember. . .

The more you can store, the more you can lose.

If you need help, I'm Bud Freund, your BNI Tech Guy.

January 28 - Education Minute - Generating Leads

I'm optimistic that despite what I say, I'll still get leads and dance cards.. . . which is why I'm here. . . to grow my business.

And for me, using BNI as a method of business growth is based on 2 things:

The commercial is one of the opportunities for active listening.

If you are in this only for you, then you'll be going, “Yeah, yeah, yeah he's looking for busted computers again. Whoa! Look what just landed on my Blackberry!”

If you're thinking about me then hopefully you'll be trying to match my cues to your rolodex. This makes my job to fine tune my request and jog your memory. . . and, “Anyone with a pulse who has a computer.” will get me about the same result as asking my kid, “How was school today?” “Fine.” That's productive dialogue.

My rolodex comes from being in town almost 30 years. However, truth be told, I’m recirculating a pretty small list of those to talk to. It seems that my list of those you don't want to talk to is substantially longer.

I consider, “working a lead” to be a euphemism for, “I'm embarrassed to keep standing up and saying, ‘I have nothing to give.’”, because in my experience “working a lead” on week 1 is usually not delivered on week 2 or 3 or 4.

I believe my BNI job is to get you face time, not sell you or your product. That's your job and besides, you'll understand how to do your business far better than I will.

If Englebert says to me, “My gribenes just aren't working right”, and Team Gribenes is in my group, I'll offer to make the match.

If I know Englebert's gribenes aren't working right, and I've got a genuine interest in Englebert as well as in Team Gribenes, I'll steer the conversation, “Englebert, how are your gribenes doing these days?”

What will Englebert think of me if I offer him help? Unless Englebert thrives on chaos, he usually welcomes assistance and solutions because I've tried to demonstrate that my interest in Englebert is genuine.

I try to use the referral slip lead barometer because it lets you know your chances for face time.

The dance card is the other active listening opportunity.

I consider standing up and saying, “I'm looking for dance cards.”, to be no different than looking at your phone and saying, “Ring dammit! Why don't you ring?”

If you're in this only for you, then save your lunch money and spend your days doing your thing.

If you're thinking about me, then get up and move your calendar into my face.

Is it hard to do all of this?

Yes and No

It's about conscious decisions, being consistent, and understanding that if you continue to do what you've done, you'll continue to get what you've got.

Any questions?
